Don Stevens

From high atop Delta Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel, veteran track announcer Don Stevens brings the racing action to life for fans watching via simulcast from coast to coast, and for those folks attending the races live in Vinton, Louisiana each evening.

Stevens' enthusiasm for racing dates back to 1977, when he attended his first live horse race at Longacres in Renton, Washington. Although the historic racetrack no longer exists, Stevens' love for the sport runs deeper and stronger than ever.

After graduating high school in 1981, Stevens' attended Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis, Minn. and earned a diploma in commercial art. He would later gain diplomas from the John Brooks Broadcasting School and the Oklahoma Auctioneering Academy.

Before joining Remington Park as a backup track announcer in 1995, Stevens worked in radio and spent several years with the Hertz Corporation as a group sales representative.

During his time at Remington Park, Stevens held such positions as Equibase chart caller, tip sheet author, assistant media relations director, on-air personality, as well as host and producer of The Remington Report television show.

In 1999, Stevens was given the job of fulltime announcer at Remington Park. Those duties continued at the Oklahoma racetrack until November, 2003, when he accepted the same position at Delta Downs.

Don's exciting race calls, combined with his handicapping prowess, make an enjoyable night at the races a sure thing for all in attendance.

For those fans who are serious about making money, Stevens provides his picks to the public one day in advance at www.deltadowns.com.

During the 2005 quarter horse season, Stevens showed bottom-line profits in both BEST BETS and LONGSHOT picks throughout the 56-day stand.

Don and his wife Jan, make their home, along with daughters Emily and Brooke, and son Nathan, in Lake Charles, La.

Race 3
  Gold Dawn
Glaring Sky
Boramir
GOLD DAWN (5-2) has run consistently faster than the rest in this heat and also boasts good breeding for an off track, which it may be at post time. Colby Hernandez in the saddle also has to be a plus here. GLARING SKY (15-1) is a first timer who boasts a nice work tab and gets lasix for his debut. BORAMIR (6-1) has shown speed in each of ihs three starts but faded each time. Tonight he getes blinkers and the rail. Look out!

Race 5
  Pomerosa Prospect
Prince Alliance
Tropical Rush
POMEROSA PROSPECT (9-2) has hit the board in six of seven career outs. Tonight she gets back to Delta where she had a rough trip to begin his career a year ago. This time he graduates. PRINCE ALLIANCE (10-1) has been off a long time but he's working very well for his return. Good natural speed and a fast work tab says he's ready at a price. TROPICAL RUSH (5-2) has never missed a paycheck and appears to be on the improve. Good connections and the third start off a layoff give him a big chance to score.

Race 5
  Water of Life
Tiz T'was
Diaganally
WATER OF LIFE (9-5) began her career at Saratoga last summer where she had some trouble for previous trainer Todd Pletcher. She's been training well for her return and her debut at Delta. Big shot to win. TIZ T'WAS (3-1) makes her sweep of all four Louisiana tracks tonight and should get a clean trip near the lead. DIAGANALLY (6-1) held the lead in deep stretch last out but got caught late. She's on the improve so include her in all your bets.

Race 3
  Hit the Road Lee
Daytimer
Louisiana Bandit
HIT THE ROAD LEE (2-1) got drilled last time out but it was on the slop and he didn't take to it at all. With a fast track tonight I believe he will return to the form that put him only a neck back of the winner Private Snead two starts back. He's also taking the shades off which means he should be able to relax and finish the job. DAYTIMER (5-1) flashed early speed in his career debut in January and shows several recent works for his return in this spot. Trainer Chatters is an underrated horseman who doesn't start many but wins a high percentage. Big chance. LOUISIANA BANDIT (3-1) is a firster whose sire, Time Bandit, wins with 16% of his debut runners. This one also has good connections, lasix, and a long work tab. Exotics player here.

Race 3
  Red Salt
Ide Better
I'm Indy Gold
RED SALT (2-1) appears to have this group over a barrel with a sharp second place effort in his debut back in November. He has been training like a bear in the mornings and runs for a good barn. IDE BETTER (5-1) is bred to win at first asking, gets lasix for his debut and has a stakes winning dam that has produced a stakes winner. Dangerous. I'M INDY GOLD (8-1) is another firster with a stakes winning dam, lasix first out, and a long work tab for a very capable trainer. Use.

Race 3
  Peach Brandy
Storm Kitty
Queen of Broadway
PEACH BRANDY (9-5) has run two very solid races in her career and each time she's finished second. On a cut back in distance to one turn and with Villafan back in the saddle I think it's graduation night this time around. STORM KITTY (9-2) has shown plenty of speed in her first three starts and should get a good trip near the lead from the outside. Upset potential. QUEEN OF BROADWAY (6-1) didn't like the footing last time out but had three solid starts prior to that. Tonight she gets a fast track and runs with La-breds again. In the mix.

Race 2
  Heavens Passage
Big Erl
Leestown Cajun
HEAVEN'S PASSAGE (9-5) takes a big drop in class but appears well meant from a barn that wins big in that situation. Regular rider LaBlanc is back in the saddle and that should spell success for this runner. BIG ERL (10-1) ran lights out last time winning by three lengths, which would have been more if jockey Melancon had totally let him out. This will be his third start off a layoff and I believe he'll run well once again. LEESTOWN CAJUN (3-1) ran pretty well last out even though he caught a sloppy track. A drop in class and Villafan in the saddle means this half of the entry has a big shot.

Race 3
  Sashay Ole
Gazillionaire
Zarbyev's Star
SASHAY OLE (2-1) has been on the improve and should get a good trip near the lead while getting back in with state-bred company. GAZILLIONAIRE (6-1) has produced her best efforts going long and gets rider Steve Bourque back in the saddle. Look for her to make a middle move and have a chance to win down the lane. ZARBEV'S STAR (3-1) is bred to run all day and drops in for a tag for the first time in her career. Expect a form reversal from this filly.

Race 2
  Distinctive Afleet
Whywhy Cat
Ima Champali
DISTINCTIVE AFLEET (7-5) ran lights out to win by almost five lengths in his local bow last month. With top connections, a race over the track and a great running style, I think it's time to repeat. WHYWHY CAT (5-2) has been on the improve and put it all together in his last out winning by over three lengths. He is stepping up in class here but with some back class I believe he can handle it. IMA CHAMPALI (9-2) leaves state-bred company but has been very consistent this season with two wins and a close second in five starts. If trainer Bourgeois has anything to do with it this runner will be in the trifecta.

Race 3
  Bayou Dawg
Lil Malagra
Senor Pino
BAYOU DAWG (9-2) ran well at Delta three starts back before running in two routes at Fair Grounds. His trainer has good numbers from limited starts on the meet and with jockey Melancon in the saddle I give him a big chance to win. LIL MALAGRA (5-2) has been knocking on the door in his last three starts and should be competitive again. SENOR PINO (8-1) chased a slow pace last time out and couldn't make up ground in the stretch on a sloppy track. Should improve here with a clean trip.
