Sister Resistor figures to be a formidable favorite in the $50K Valdale Stakes at Turfway Park, and those looking for a favorite with a solid chance of winning need look no further, but an overflow field fourteen three-year-old fillies was entered for the race, so there are plenty of opponents willing to test the Kenneth McPeek trainee.
Only two of the fillies, Sister Resistor and All Country, have recorded a speed figure that would normally be good enough to win this race, but several others have figures very close, and at this time of the year, sharp improvement by three-year-olds is more often the rule than the exception.
All Country’s top figure was recorded on a sloppy track, but her previous race on that type surface was nothing special, so the race may indicate an improved filly and not a preference for the sloppy track. One concern is that she is moving from a 28% trainer to a stable which won with just one of the last 28 starters, but seven of 12 runners at the meet finished in the money, so there are some mixed signals. The ex-claimer’s odds should be tempting, and she draws a much better post that the favorite.
Hot Citizen is coming off two sharp sprint wins, is certainly bred to handle the one-mile distance, and also gets a good post for what figures to be her running style in at this distance. She is sent out by a stable that won with two of three starters at the meet and that I have had some very good luck with in the past. Her odds should also be attractive.
For Royalty and Lisa’s Kitten are both stakes-winners making their first start of the year for high profile-trainer Michael Maker, who wins with 27% of his starters returning from such layoffs. Lisa’s Kitten has shown a bit more talent, but may prefer the turf, and For Royalty has the better works for her return.
Cactus Cadillac, coming off a stakes win over this track, could be very tough here, and several of the other fillies have been close in stakes, so handicappers have plenty to pick from in this very interesting race.
