Saturday's Darley Debutante $300,000.00 Grade 1 will be run on Del Mar's all weather track at 7 furlongs for 2 year old fillies. We would be remiss if we didn't mention a few caveats. None of the entrants has ever run 7 furlongs; three of these fillies making only their second start; Repo and Necessary Evil are both trained by Doug O'Neil; Mi Sueno and Champagne D'Oro both trained by Eric Gulliot; and Champagne D'Oro's last win tainted by possible use of a banned steroid. With all that out of the way, here's how we see the race:
Repo has 3 wins and a place out of 4 races, is well rested and should have no trouble at this distance. Gomez is replacing Nakatani for today's race.
Mi Sueno was impressive at Del Mar's Grade 3 Sorrento, closing and then pulling away to win by 6 1/2 lengths after having finished second in her earlier 2 maiden races. She's coming off a bullet workout in her last work.
Necessary Evil lost to Mi Sueno last outing after having beaten her in their first match up, but did manage a second despite a rough trip. She's looking to win the rubber match.
