La Jolla Handicap
By C Wayne
Del Mar's La Jolla (8th race) is a Grade II Stakes for 3 year olds at a mile and a sixteenth over the turf. The field is marked by inexperience at this class, with only half the entries having run at the Graded Stakes level and frankly without a great deal of success.
I'll Show Them ~ This lightly raced son of Smarty Jones is undefeated in two races but we'll have to wait for this race to see if he lives up to his name, breeding and potential. He benefits from a 44 day rest since his last outing.
Meteore ~ Weakened last time out on Del Mar's turf, but showed promise over the turf at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park earlier this year. More experienced than I'll Show Them and running 5 pounds lighter than last race look for a better ride from Solis this time out.
Gretsky ~ Has provened to be a strong competitor since moving to the turf in May, having finished no worse than second and paying decent odds. Finished only a length back to I'll Show Them after a wide trip in early July. Will the extra sixteenth give him enough room to overtake this time?
