Nancy's Glitter Handicap
Updated: Jul-24-2009 Created: Jul-24-2009
By Denny Nash
8 – Sweetsouthernqueen
7 – Cat Can Do
2 – Wyatt’s Woman
3 – Glotona
Vincent Blengs has Sweetsouthernqueen, the daughter of Sweetsouthernsaint in razor sharp form. She has been dominating the Starter Allowance class at Calder, winning on both turf and dirt taking 5 of her last 6. Her second place finish was on the turf from the 1 post where she was locked on the rail and burst out too late to catch a longshot winner.
She beat the heavily favored Awesome Alexandra twice, the second time more convincing than the first. She also put away my longshot horse Glotona on May 31 where the latter got her head in front coming around the turn but had trouble hitting her stride and faded to finish fourth.
My second choice Cat Can Do was originally my first choice. In her first race this year the Ziadie trainee showed little in the Grade 3 Sabina and again the Ocala. But, like all good Storm Cat horses (second generation) she ate up the mud and made a winning move in the Liberada Stakes. The winner Eclisse benefited from an uncontested lead, and cut very slow fractions, which makes it very hard to close, making Cat’s stretch run an impressive one.
With the early speed of Jessica is Bad, Glotona, and perhaps Hopeful Image, and with Sweetsouthernqueen up close, it could be a great set up for Cat Can Do’s late run.
My third choice is Wyatt’s Woman. She held off the super-chalk Cocoa Beach (at 1-9 odds!) on June 21st at Belmont Park to finish 3rd. She proceeded that race with two second place finishes at 7 furlongs. She picks up the capable services of Jermaine Bridgmohan. I believe she will be right there at the finish.
And finally I always love to throw in a longshot and what better horse than Glotona? She was able to take a brief lead over Sweetsouthernqueen, which lately is not an easy task. If Wilmer Galviz can give her a patient trip, she could cause some trouble at big odds.
