No consensus emerged in the wide distribution of handicappers’ Breeders’ Cup Classic selections and comments. While Zenyatta is clearly a factor in this race, only two handicappers, Cwayne of Picks and Plays and Mike DeAngelo of A Plus Thorobred selected Zenyatta to win. Some, such as Nico Kunalea of WiredFigs, expressed outright skepticism about the California contender’s chances. “Sorry Zenyatta fans; it ain't happening,” said Kunalea. In a survey of 16 handicappers’ selections, only one, Rip Van Winkle, was selected by more than 2 handicappers, with 3 naming Rip Van Winkle as their top choice to win. “Goldikova was considered 2nd best European last year and we all remember what she did. Rip is considered the 2nd best European this year, and I expect him to lead the parade home,” remarked Jeffery Cobb, Case the Race’s guest commentator for Calder Race Course. Bob Pandolfo of Sharphorses selected Richard’s Kid to win, but conceded that, “The horse to beat is Rip Van Winkle.”
Two of our guest commentators, Carl M. and Man in White, favored Gio Ponti to win. Regarding Gio Ponti, Man in White drew lessons from last year. He said, “Last year he was entered in a dirt race after running all turf races to that point and he obliged by running his lifetime fastest figure at Santa Anita. Today he approaches this race similarly with 5 turf races.”
Here is the breakdown of the handicappers’ selections.

I'm expecting a photo finish between Rip Van Winkle and Zenyatta. Should be a thrilling race to behold.

Goldikova was considered 2nd best Euro last year and we all remember what she did. Rip is considered the 2nd best Euro this year, and I expect him to lead the parade home. I may be wrong, but I think Zenyatta looks over matched here.

Sorry Zenyatta fans, it ain't happening. Rip Van Winkle has raced in the shadow of what many consider the best horse in the world, Sea the Stars.

This 4-years old colt is doing extremely well for today's race. Let's just toss out his last race as he didn't like the wet track. He can handle the synthetic track and will show how good he can be. To do so he will need to beat, Zenyatta. For sure a tough task but let's take a shot.

Gio Ponti – Last year he was entered in a dirt race after running all turf races to that point and he obliged by running his lifetime fastest figure at Santa Anita. Today he approaches this race similarly with 5 turf races. Summer Bird - 3 times at this distance & won 2 with absolutely huge figures.

Zenyatta will remain unbeaten, but look for Girolamo in the money with a decent payoff.

RICHARD’S KID is a peaking 4yo coming off the two best races of his career including a big win at this distance in the Pacific Classic, training strongly over the track and he could be set for another move forward. The horse to beat is RIP VAN WINKLE, who ran a big race against Sea The Stars at this distance on turf.

This colt is on the improve since moving to the synthetic track with the addition of blinkers for the Baffert barn and the added distance should hit him right between the eyes today!

Its Mine That Bird for the upset at a good price, strong closing speed, has run against some tough competition in past, gained ground in stretch last 2 races. Versatile horse with amazing closing speed that will hand Zenyatta a first defeat.

Long shot & why not? A young, strong and improving horse; Girolamo will be hustled to the front early. If he has enough left after a mile, he just might hold on.
