Knowing horse racing terminology is one of the key ways to produce winners at any racetrack. Understanding "How To Bet" is half the battle for amateurs and professionals alike. What good is having a winner of a horse race and then wagering it incorrectly? We've all done this at one time or another. Why? Because horse racing has a multitude of wagering types that can easily confuse or get in the way of betting it right. Here's some basic horse racing terminology that can greatly improve your betting strategy. Trifecta Wagering The $1.00 Triple Box = Make sure you say one dollar triple box and then the program numbers of the horses that you wish to box. You may, on one ticket, box a minimum of three horses up to a maximum of the entire field. This gives the bettor every possible combination of the chosen horses to finish first, second, and third in exact order. The numbers of bets for each combination is:
3 horse box - 6 bets ($6.00)
4 horse box - 24 bets
5 horse box - 60 bets
6 horse box - 120 bets
7 horse box - 210 bets
8 horse box - 336 bets
9 horse box - 504 bets
10 horse box - 720 bets
Remember, to determine the cost of the Trifecta Box wager you wish to make, multiply the dollar amount of your individual wager by the number of bets as determined by the number of horses you wish to box. For example, in a 3 horse box there are 6 bets. If the dollar amount of the individual wager is $1.00 then the cost would be $1 x 6 bets = $6.00. If the individual wager is $2.00 then the cost would be $2 x 6 bets = $12.00
Exacta Box Another betting strategy is the Exacta box bet. You applied your horse racing system and deduced a winner. Now your important wager must yield the proper dividends at the ticket window. In Boxing the Exacta, the bettor may box a minimum of 2 horses up to a maximum of the entire field on a single ticket, thereby giving the bettor every possible combination of the chosen horses to finish first and second in Exacta order. The number of bets for each combination is:
2 horse box - 2 bets
3 horse box - 6 bets
4 horse box - 12 bets
5 horse box - 20 bets
6 horse box - 30 bets
7 horse box - 42 bets
8 horse box - 56 bets
9 horse box - 72 bets
Exacta Box wagers may be made for as little as $1.00 up to a maximum of $250 per individual bet. To determine the cost of your Exacta Box wager, multiply the dollar amount of your individual wager by the number of bets as determined by the number of horses you wish to box. For example, in a 3 horse box there are 6 bets. If the dollar amount of the individual wager is $2.00 then the cost would be $2.00 x 6 bets = $12.00. Remember that horse racing terminology applies to every person who visits the racetrack. These are simple basic wagering techniques to improve your play. Triple Wheel A Wheel bet is a popular wager. This betting strategy can yield great payoffs. Why? Catching a longshot to run 2nd and 3rd is probable. Here's how this horse racing terminology works:
If you select one horse to win and wish to "Wheel" it with the rest of the field in the place and show positions, you may do so at any ticket window. If your "Wheel" horse wins the race, you win the triple regardless of which horses finish second or third. You may also "Wheel" a horse in the place position with the rest of the field in the win and show positions. You may also "Wheel" a horse in the show position with the rest of the field in the win and place positions.
"WHEEL" wagers may be purchased for as little as $1.00 or $2.00 up to a maximum of $250 per individual wager. Based on a $1.00 wager individual "Wheel" wager the cost is as follows:
Seven Horse field - $30.00
Eight horse field - $42.00
Nine horse field - $56.00
Ten horse field - $72.00
Triple Key Pick at least three or more horses. Your key horse must win and if 2 of the other horses finish 2nd and 3rd in any order - You are a winner! Another very simple betting strategy.
Triple Key wagering types:
4 horse key - 6 bets
5 horse key - 12 bets
6 horse key - 20 bets
7 horse key - 30 bets
8 horse key - 42 bets
9 horse key - 56 bets
10 horse key - 72 bets
Again these individual wagers are based on a $1.00 wager. These wager types are not secrets of handicapping but greatly help in achieving your maximum winning yield at any racetrack. It's also important to remember that some racetracks do not offer $1.00 wagers and some tracks do...it is common that the $1.00 wager usually pays half of the full $2.00 wager.
WIN - You're a winner if the horse that you bet on wins!
PLACE - You're a winner if your horse finishes First or Second!
SHOW - You're a winner if your horse finishes First, Second or Third!
EXACTA - Pick the First TWO horses to finish in exact order.
TRIFECTA - Pick the First THREE horses to finish in the exact order.
A professional horse racing betting system is not needed to wager properly on any given horse race. However, basic wagering terms and horse racing terminology terms are needed in order in Win, Place or Show! ------------------------- This article was reprinted with permission from Horse Racing Book.com http://www.horse-racing-book.com/horse-racing-terminology.html The site’s author, Vince Conti, is the author of Thoroughbred Horse Racing Systems and Methodologies.
