Calder's 7th race for Independence Day is scheduled for a mile and a sixteenth on the turf for 3-year-olds and up, but once again Calder's forcast is for thunderstorms, so it's likely to run at a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt. This race is a $16k claimer with a purse of $13.5k.
Regis (#1 at 3.50 to 1 morning line) is stepping down in class after placing last time out at this distance on an off-track here at Calder, but fared poorly in his only turf race, finishing 5th out of 12 at seven and one half furlongs.
Besselink (#4 at 5 to 1 morning line) finished second by a neck on this course in mid June at this distance and seems to like Calder's turf, but won't be a serious threat if the race moves to dirt.
Heez For Doc (#12 at 4 to 1 morning line) has finished in the money his last 5 times out on dirt and turf... maybe it's finally his time to win one. Should benefit from the 5 pound weight advantage. Look for at least another money finish no matter what the weather does.
Sun Scorpion (#2 at 6 to 1 morning line) seems to be the best of the rest since shipping from Gulfstream and has experience on Calder's off-track dirt as well as their turf course.
