Case The Race - Handicapping data and information

17 Handicappers on the Preakness

After a Kentucky Derby result that almost no one predicted, it takes a bit of fortitude to publicly share your handicapping selections for the Preakness Stakes. Fortunately, we found 17 handicappers with that fortitude. As with the Kentucky Derby, we asked handicappers to deliver their selections for the Preakness Stakes.   The tally of selections gave 4 to Rachel Alexandra, 3 to Mine That Bird, and 2 each to Friesan Fire, Papa Clem, and Pioneerof The Nile.    While Rachel Alexandra was the handicappers’ favorite to win, many focused on the challenge of finding value.   Tim Maas, of Overlay Publications noted, “Each of the five ‘contenders’ in my odds line is an underlay, with morning-line odds that are lower than my fair odds.”
Here is the breakdown for our 17 handicappers’ selections:

Borel opts for Rachel Alexandra. He should know. Favorable Post. 5 lb weight advantage. Versatile running style. Eclipse Award trainer. Winner fast , wet and synthetic tracks.

Filly has dominated her foes in her four starts this year, the boys don't appear overwhelming and she clearly is the one to beat.

Each of the five "contenders" in my odds line is an underlay, with morning-line odds that are lower than my fair odds.
Mine that Bird
Big Drama

It would be easy to go for Rachel Alexandra with Borel defecting as the Bird's rider, but we think he can do it again. Well-rested and with plenty of speed, Big Drama would make a good value wager at 6 to 1 or better.
Mine That Bird
Mine That Bird
Craig Milkowski
His Sunland race was much better than people realize, and he may prove the Derby was no fluke.
Mine That Bird
Pioneerof The Nile
Michael A. Gooley
Mine That Bird won the prestigious Kentucky Derby in textbook classic big win style. Continues to improve posting high triple digit speed rating.  Definitely Triple Crown  material in all respects!
Friesan Fire
Win bet on Friesan Fire
Paul Lambrakis
Lost all chance at start in Derby and wasn't persevered with.  Goes into this race as a fresh horse.  Note sharp workout Tuesday.
Friesan Fire
A 3-horse exacta box Friesan Fire, Rachel Alexandra and Pioneer of the Nile.
Ray Fox
Wow!!  Winning jockey of the Kentucky Derby gets off?  Unheard of. The filly is great, but against the boys.  Dry track, shorter distance and sharp turns, I'll take the speed, Frirsan Fire.
Papa Clem
Rachel Alexandra
Mike DeAngelo
On paper, Rachel Alexandra looks unbeatable. Borel passing on a chance to ride a Triple Crown victor speaks volumes. Papa Clem can upset at a price.
Papa Clem
Exacta box Papa Clem / Pioneer of the Nile and Rachel Alexandra

Value play!
Pioneerof The Nile

My heart wants me to go with Derby winner,  but I have stick with the Pioneer. He looked like a winner at head of stretch.
Pioneerof The Nile
Pioneerof The Nile
Kenneth Strong
We liked him in the Kentucky Derby and he ran a gutsy second, so we'll stick with him again at a nice price!
Big Drama
Big Drama
Man In White
Big Drama Gets better w/every race. At Calder, he was running away from the field. Breeding suggests he could certainly go the extra 1/8 mi. His figures & Johnny V put him in the mix.
General Quarters -- for value
Exacta Part Wheel with 8 Rachel Alexandra on top and under 1 Big Drama,5 Friesan Fire,8 General Quarters
George Kaywood
Weather & distance big factors in this race. Several pace scenarios, so I'll go for price horses. Don't see any sure things in this race.
Musket Man
Box #2, #3, #6 and #13
Gord Elder
Filly may not be quite good enough.  Look for more from Musket Man.   Terrain may surprise at odds.  Mine That Bird loses jockey, needs trip.
Take The Point
Musket man
Johnny Jupitur
Musket Man continues to impress. Take The Point will score the second big upset in the triple crown.
