Post-Race Review
CASE numbers came through in Hollywood Park’s$100,000 Real Quiet Stakes when Chocolate Candy, who boasted the highest CASE ratings in three sections, won the race by a length and a half and paid $15.60. The two-year-old son of Candy Ride (Arg) took the lead from J P Jammer in mid stretch and drew off to score convincingly for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. J P Jammer held second from favored Charlie’s Moment – interestingly, all three colts in the trifecta shared the highest Coordination scores in the field at 81. That trifecta paid $109.30.
When We Met, who also had high CASE numbers, finished a disappointing fifth in a field of seven. Upon closer review, When We Met’s only win was at seven furlongs, and the Real Quiet was contested over 1 1/16 miles.
Garrett Gomez rode Chocolate Candy, who is out of the Seattle Slew mare Crownette and is owned by the Sid and Jenny Craig Trust. Chocolate Candy was exiting a 1-mile maiden win at Oak Tree on October 4th.
Pre-Race Analysis
Seven well-matched two-year-old males line up for the $100,000 Real Quiet Stakes at Hollywood Park on Saturday, a 1 1/16 mile prep race for the rich CashCall Futurity on December 20.
Mark S the Cooler, a maiden, breaks from the rail. The son of Johar went wide into the turn in his racing debut at the end of September, then suffered through a rotten trip to be second on October 19th. Trainer Doug O’Neill must think highly of this gelding, who he entered for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but didn’t make it into the field. O’Neill’s other entrant is Escalon, a colt by Spanish Steps who finished third in the California Cup Juvenile two months after taking a maiden debut at Del Mar.
When We Met and Chocolate Candy have excellent CASE numbers. When We Met, a son of Maria’s Mon trained by Mark Glatt, was the horse to defeat Mark S the Cooler last out in a sparkling performance after going four wide on the turn. For that effort, When We Met earned a 102 for Aerobic Efficiency, a 94 for Endurance, and the highest overall average in the field at 89.5. On the other hand, Chocolate Candy also received a 94 for Endurance two starts back, and has twice earned a rating of 90 for Stride Quality. Chocolate Candy won a maiden race on October 4th.
Charlie’s Moment, breaking from the outside, is an early favorite for the race. The Indian Charlie gelding just missed by a nose in the Jack Goodman Stakes, earning an 81 Coordination rating. Before that effort, Charlie’s Moment won the Gateway to Glory Stakes at Fairplex Park, and has a record of 2 wins and 2 seconds in 6 starts, with earnings over $108,000.
Danny Q and JP Jammer, two horses with only maiden wins to their credit, complete the field. JP Jammer finished fourth in the California Cup Juvenile last out, while Danny Q finished sixth in the same race.
