Golden Gate Fields January 2 Race 8
Race Analysis GG Jan-02 Race 8
The 8th and featured event of the afternoon is slated for the infield turf course and we’re betting this race stays on the “green” though there is some sprinkles in the forecast for Friday. Although only 7 are entered to go, this is a nice field for Northern California and not a lot separates top to bottom. We feel there is enough pace in the race to set it up for the come from behind runners and we’ll string along with Stormy Surge and Sir Al dueling it out down the lane.

STORMY SURGE is a solid fit at this level. He has already won at this condition twice on the local lawn, loves the local course, retains the leading rider, and has the right style for the race. He’s going to take a lot of beating in this spot and though the price won’t be all that attractive, he will probably vie for favoritism with his next competitor who is coming out of graded stakes races. “Surge” is 8/5 on our line and anything over that at post time becomes a solid play.
SIR AL could go off as the favorite in this race off the company he has kept lately. The Hollywood Derby had the best 3 year old grass horses on the West Coast and he was only beaten 7 lengths, so he really didn’t disgrace himself. His 2nd place finish at Hawthorne was on a “soft” course which should be very similar to the one he’ll race on Saturday. Julio Garcia is a good turf rider and Al is going to be rolling in the lane. He is our second choice at 2/1.
LOCKFORD has been hooking some tough Allowance hombres down South and he figures for a piece of the action in this spot. He has the right style for the race and Hollendorfer wouldn’t have him in here if he didn’t think he fit the conditions. Lockford is a contender and we made him 4/1 on our line. He is a play at anything in that area at post time.
