A field of 9 older horses are slated to go in Saturday's feature race at Churchill Downs, the Grade III $100,000 Louisville Handicap to be contested at the grueling distance of a mile and a half on turf.
The morning line favorite is The Harlequin Ranches' Spice Route, fresh off a nice win in the Grade II Elkhorn Handicap at Keeneland on April 24. The 5 year old son of King's Best out of the In the Wings mare Zanzibar has already bankrolled over $700,000 in career earnings and has really shown an affinity for getting the distance. Veteran high percentage rider Shaun Bridgmohan has accepted the call for trainer Roger Attfield.
The main competitor appears to be Fred Bradley's Brass Hat, who made a nice rally in the lane last time to finish 3rd to Spice Route, having only been beaten 2 lengths in the process. Red-hot triple crown rider Calvin Borel accepts a return call for William Bradley.
