Moccasin Stakes
By Emily Shields
Post-Race Analysis
Cutting back in distance and in company, graded stakes winner Evita Argentina added the seven furlong Moccasin Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday to her resume. Eleven fillies went to the gate with the previously undefeated Mi Chiamano Mimi favored, but that filly could not hold off the winner's charge down the stretch after setting the pace, and Mi Chiamano Mimi had to settle for second with Palacio de Amor running third.
John Sadler, who has been having a remarkable year, conditions Evita Argentina for owners Halo Farms and Three Sisters Thoroughbreds. Evita Argentina was exiting a disappointing run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and scored the victory, worth $100,000 total purse, under jockey Tyler Baze. A daughter of the sensational racehorse Candy Ride (Arg), Evita Argentina now has a record of three wins in five starts, and paid $14.80 to win.

HorsePlayer: Life At The Track
If you are looking for a good read and insight into the culture of horseplayers, Horseplayer: Life at the Track, offers both. We turned the tables on the book’s author, Ted McClelland, by making him the subject of our recent interview.
Case The Race: In many ways, your book is a study of horseplayers. What did you learn about horseplayers as a population?
TM: My definition of a horseplayer is someone who will spend $200 on a bet but won’t spend $20 on a pair of pants. They’re very much like starving artists that way.

Below is an excerpt from a piece we recently featured by Tim Maas, owner of Overlay Publications.
"Savvy horseplayers know that, in their quest to show a positive bottom line from their efforts, they need to overcome three obstacles that constitute racing's own version of the bookmaker's point spread: (1) the track take, which draws off a portion of the total wagering pool before odds are calculated and winnings are distributed, in order to pay taxes, race purses, and operating expenses; (2) breakage, which rounds winning payoffs down to the nearest multiple of ten or twenty cents, for the stated purpose of avoiding the delay and inconvenience that would be caused by having to pay out winning bets to the penny; and (3) the people standing in line with them at the betting windows."

It's a new and challenging era in American racing. The installation of the new synthetic racing surfaces at several North American racetracks has created a variety of new handicapping riddles, which have left even the most seasoned and expert players scratching their heads searching for orderliness and answers.
