History
History of the Kentucky Derby

This year, 2009, will be the 135th Kentucky Derby. To put the resilience of the Derby in perspective, consider that 2009 will mark the 99th year of the World Series, and only the 43rd Super Bowl.

What started out a local race with grand aspirations has turned into a world event. Over the years, attendance has grown; in 2001, it topped 154,000 people. Originally, it was a one and a half mile race.

The distance was reduced to one and a quarter miles in 1896.
