This week will be held the 135th Preakness Stakes and the trainers, jockeys and horses are getting ready to contest the second jewel of the Triple Crown on May 15th at Pimlico Race Course.

Super Saver has made three entries this year and is the big winner in the latest edition of the Kentucky Derby, situation that put Todd Pletcher at great advantage to sweep the second stage of the Triple Crown and certainly ranks among the favorites of the Preakness Stakes contenders Preakness Stakes contenders.

Of the 19 rivals that Super Saver left behind in the Derby, only three are under consideration for the Preakness: Paddy O'Prado, Lookin At Lucky and Dublin.

Paddy O'Prado finished third in the Kentucky Derby and is the winner of Palm Beach. On the other hand, Lookin at Lucky was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby but its luck was not enough and finished sixth. Finally, but not less important, Dublin trained by D. Wayne Lukas reached the seventh place in the same competition.

In Preakness is always expected to see the other horses who ran in the Derby, but there are also some horses that did not start in the first leg. Consider that in the history of the Preakness only in three times the winners skipped the Derby and won the second stage.

Super Saver will be joined by Aikenite, which will give the second inning for trainer Todd Pletcher in the next Saturday’s race.

In contrast, Ice Box which showed a highly favorable development following closely Super Saver in Kentucky Derby, will skip the Preakness and will get prepared to compete directly in the Belmont Stakes to be held on next June 5th.

The Preakness ranks second according to popularity after the Derby and is rewarded with a purse of US$1 million. Since its first edition in 1874, only 11 horses have been able to win the Triple Crown and the last to get it was “Affirmed” in 1978.
