Countdowns are on for Oaks and Derby Day
|
Updated: Apr-22-2010 Created: Apr-22-2010
As a package deal I can say that this might be the most anticipated "2" days of racing that I have wanted to see for perhaps my entire career. I have many reasons for this but the top one is that it appears the Horse Of The Year is back to her brilliant level under the Twin Spires. Indeed, Rachel Alexandra left chills running down the spines of all who were trackside to witness her bullet 6f work on Monday. My travels allowed me to watch the progression of this filly from her 1st start to where she is today hoping to make the undercard on Oaks Day. I have said all along that Hal Wiggins deserves as much credit as anyone with this champion as his old school patient tactics have allowed us all to see perhaps several more flashes of brilliance from this electrifying filly. If anyone wants a quick reminder of one year ago, simply replay the video and call of last years Oaks and you will see why she was Horse Of The Year. Ironically enough, the closest thing to Rachel that I have seen train with comparbable talent is a young filly named Blind Luck. Mind you, I assumed it would be years before I would put a thoroughbred even in her league from the a.m. and p.m. Now it looks like Oaks Day brings to the track the "2" of them only races apart------ANTICIPATION!!!!!!!!!! O.K.---on to the Derby. Big workout from Lookin At Lucky today for Bob Baffert. I received a text around 5:30 pacific time from one of my sources trackside describing the move as "awesome" going 12's all the way around and toying with his workmate. I have read the quotes since the move suggesting that like Baffert thought, he is better on dirt. Let me say for the record that I dont think today's work proves that as I had him out 7f over the Pro Ride in 124.3 prior to the SA Derby and he worked against a more established foe to boot in El Martillo vs. Broken Tango who has only broken his maiden at Oaklawn Park in today's drill. Please paste your entire article here, or just start writing. All I can say is whatever Bob---I know all you really care about is that he is when it counts on the 1st Saturday in May. I will comment further perhaps on the drill after I watch the video of it. Conveyance showed off his speed to earn the bullet of the day but I would rather see him go 7f out or a mile for me to believe he can carry it the 1 1/4 mile. Those were the highlights of the day--each day we will get abit more intense from here. Toby Turrell
