Toby Turrell on the Preakness

Final Preakness Thoughts

In trying to figure out where to begin on reflecting on a race that I hope let no one down I would like to give a special kudos to what I believe was an eclipse award winning radio show broadcast by my longtime friend in the business Felix Taverna on Sunday morning the day after the Preakness.  I have been on this show with Felix for about 15 years full time now and he did the sport about as well as anyone could have done it over the air of XX-1090 A.M. on Race And Sports Radio Sunday morning. I consider myself only blessed to have contributed my piece as it was a blessing for me to be with this years winner Rachel Alexandra all the way as I was stationed at Churchill Downs for the summer of '08 where she started what I believe will be known as perhaps the greatest run of any thoroughbred in the history of our great sport. Honestly speaking, I tried to get my hands on her within a week after she broke her maiden but there is no way that anyone on the planet could have imagined what she would grow up to be and look like a year later. I simply thought at the time that she was a great investment, by no means could I have known that she would be one of the sports all time greatest. However, that is where the key to the story comes in as I personally believe it was the masterful handling and care of her veteran trainer Hal Wiggins that has allowed us all to get to this point with this special filly.  My grandfather always taught me from my first day in the sport; it is the class of the horse, trainer, owner and jockey that will allow greatness.  I can honestly say that 40 years later I now know what he meant and believe that I have now lived the pinnacle of his patented opinion.  Hal Wiggins was on the radio both Saturday and Sunday with us and he exemplifies class in a human being.

I am biased however as it was by pure fate that an usher at Churchill on Oaks day as the fillies were in the paddock being saddled for the 135th running told me -- "a stranger" mind you that this filly couldn’t happen to a nicer man that he and his family knew for all these years thru a local church. Beauty of it is, the usher was nervous for his friend and had no idea that she was a heavy favorite and going to demolish the field.  The monkey is off my back as well now as Hal said he would have no problem comparing Rachel to Ruffian although he was quick to point out that he didn’t have a first hand view of Ruffian on many levels. I think the Bloodhorse blog might have set a record on opinion as to how great Rachel is in comparison to the all time greats of the sport as it was posted on Thursday evening and nearly 95% of the fans thought that she wasn’t in that league yet as they named their all time favorite horses.  Great for the sport!!!!!!  Speaking of class, you won’t see a more textbook example of it then watching Rachel in the days leading up to the Preakness and more importantly on the day of the race itself.  She is definitely one of the classiest horses ever to race as Hal outlined it to the tee over the air on Sunday as my late grandfather Bud Baedeker would have loved to hear.  Her jockey and owner nurtured her class to perfection thus completing the cycle.  The only thing that brought bigger chills to me then the racecall of the Oaks was the racecall of the Preakness which is how the radio show started on Sunday morning.  Felix let all his audience in on this filly way ahead of the industry and I am so thrilled to have been the one to play that role back in November.  As far as the running of the race goes, Rachel had to be great to win as her 1st 1/4 was about 22.2 in real terms over a real deep track that caused the best in the game to sputter by the time they hit the top of the lane chasing her. Just think of that fact alone and take nothing away from the race that Derby winner Mine That Bird ran as he silenced myself and everybody else who thought his victory was a fluke.  I hope he goes on to the Belmont and runs big again.  Musket Man is a real talented and strong colt and he is not to be taken lightly either in the future.

Obviously, for me the biggest disappointment of the Preakness was Pioneerof The Nile but I will use him as another example of perhaps how trying that track really was for the day and why the key to who was best was indeed the 1st 1/4 of the race.  Bottom line, this is exactly what the sport needed and got as its ratings were sky high on T.V. and all who were tuned in got to witness history in a way that makes our sport the greatest on the planet.

Update May 15, 12:30 PM PST

Baffert says The Nile is better by the day and Asmussen says that Rachel's 1/2 was the best he's ever seen or been a part of ...  I might also mention I saw the final 1/2 mile works for my 2 contenders on "pursuit of the crown" and loved what I saw as both horses breezed the right way and looked razor sharp.

Post May 9, 2009

The Preakness Stakes took on a whole new dimension today (May 10) as the new owners of Rachel Alexandra have decided to now run the brilliant filly in the 2nd jewel of the Triple Crown. I go back with this horse to the summer of '08 at Churchill Downs when she broke her maiden. In fact, I tried thru several channels to get her purchased within a week after she broke her maiden because I saw some freakishness in her morning gallops a few days after she won her first race sprinting knowing that she wasnt even a sprinter based on her ability to cover ground alongside some freakish mechanics that the world is now aware of.  I watched in amazement for the week up to the Ky Dy from the same stands and with the same impressions as this young filly showed myself and all watching her Derby week that she is a star.  Her final works leading into the Derby were off the charts and her gallop outs and morning gallops were something I havent seen in 25 years of clocking horses. I told my close friends that they were going to see perhaps a performance of a lifetime in the Oaks based on how Rachel looked on the day before the race and we did as she was 1/5 off the track record without ever being allowed to take the bit at any point of the race winning by 20 lengths.  I was on 2 radio shows in early November here in So. Cal telling the story of how I pleaded with all who would listen to step up and buy her days after she won her 1st race.  Bottom line, to me she is a standout wherever she runs and I hope she stays sound because she might be the greatest horse the sport has ever seen.  As far as the Derby goes, if Pioneer Of The Nile relaxes he will run a big race and complete my exacta as it stands over a week out. I spoke with Bob Baffert today at Santa Anita and he was still confident in his horse as I think Joe Steiner is set to leave here to work him for the possible start maybe tonight.  Stay tuned as we will follow all the news up to the race and make our final report on the eve of the race as we did for the Kentucky Derby.

Howdy...pioneer should improve off that last one....the conditions were a bit poor last time & pionear had to get the CONDITIONING 'KINKS' out of his system....should be an interesting ''reach'' run...

Rachel Alexandre will win the Preakness by more than 5 lengths. She is the best horse in the country nobody can beat her.

The Bird winning the derby was a mistake. Anyone that had him was lucky. As far as the Preakness - Rachel is a great filly and MAY beat the boys but from a betting standpoint it make no sense to play her. Take the derby favorite - Friesan Fire, Pioneer of the Nile and Papa Clem in 1st,2nd and all. Then in 1st, all, 3rd. Throw an extra trifecta with Rachal in the all spot just in case and maybe you will be visiting the IRS window!

Toby, Do you remember how fantastic Stardom Bound looked winning the Breeders cup Jv ? She is now burned out but if Stardom Bound was at her peak and ran against Rachael in the Oaks it would have been a great match race. The fact Boral is going with this filly tells the tale. I wonder if Mike Smith can at least give the 'Bird' a shot and just gallop the first half in 51. Mind That Bird is no fluke! Mark

I think PAPA CLEM will battle to the wire. The distance is to his liking and the horse has been very resilient in the final furlong since winning the Arkansas Derby.

FROM TOBY: Dont worry about Rachel on the tight turns--one thing is for sure--her turn times are brilliant racing, working and even galloping out where at Churchill she galloped out around the clubhouse turn in 110.1 after working only a 1/2!!!!

two weeks rest after a max effort-pimlico's tight turns that do not favor long striding horses, low odds on your exacta--i'd sure like to book you're action, toby.don

Everybody sure seems set on giving Rachel the crown. I'm I the only one who worries about her coming back to race after 2 weeks??? I think this race will be a great race but I wouldn't be shocked at all if Rachel doesn't win. What would be a shock would be if the bird wins again!!!

Just as long as Jess doesn't get so "ultra ego" that we see a rerun of Ruffian. Fillies are not expected to beat boys, who says otherwise? That is why we have races for fillies and mares, why go against the practice of what we have known for all of racing. This business of Supplementing, I think Zayet is right. There is the "Sport" of Horse Racing, and there is making a bet on a horse. Winning the Oaks should be enough! She's the best 3 year old filly in America. And yes later this year I would enjoy seeing her compete against Zenyetta. This is the correct approach.

It's a shame Rachel Alexander's former owner refused to run her in the derby. Here is yet another year without s triple Crown Winner. I haven't been this excited since I first saw Curlin break his maiden. She is a FREAK! GA

so she will beat a nondescript bunch of boys in the Preakness. I want to see her try Zenyatta

this will be a no-brainer in the Preekness, with Rachael Alexander, then Pioneer of the Nile, second, with all for third Tri-fecta Terry, Tulsa

Rachel Alexandra, reminds me of Nijinsky. If you look at their conformation side by side it's uncanny. Jack Overstreet, Sun City West, AZ.

Toby, What does Bob going to do with Pioneer? He needs to give him a little bit of "perk" so the horse will be able to step up in the Preakness. I bet against "Bird" in the Derby mainly because I was afraid of his 50/1 odds. Did I make a big mistake? The Bird was the only one missing in my Superfecta... I do believe that the filly can take over the boys this time... she was awesome and out of this world!! She's shown some powerful moves than any other filly in her division. I'll be watching to see what's next.
